Regenerative Agriculture & Socio-Ecological Justice to Heal the Earth
International Environmental Conference
Friday, September 8th – 9th, 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Richmond Memorial Convention Center
403 Civic Center Plaza, Richmond, CA 94804
This conference was inspired by the book Soil Not Oil, authored by Dr. Vendana Shiva
The global movement for environmental justice and a livable climate has brought international attention to the value of soils as a sink for the carbon accumulated in the atmosphere due to irresponsible consumption of fossil fuels. Increasing soil organic matter is the only practical way to mitigate climate chaos. For several years, Soil Not Oil has worked with anti-fossil fuel activists and other stakeholders, helping them recognize that many factors contribute to harmful carbon emissions including soil depletion, loss of biodiversity, deforestation, industrial-agriculture, and any practices that threaten the health and function of soils. Additionally, leading scientists, farmers and soil advocates have defined soil carbon sequestration as a viable path to mitigate global warming. Many past attendees have been so inspired by the conference that they have shifted the focus of their work towards soils. Also as a direct result of the SNO conference, several environmental organizations implemented programs related to soils. The annual Soil Not Oil International Conference provides a unique bridge between the clean energy and the agro-ecology movements. We educate participants and provide them with the tools to become agents of change from any position, location, or income.
The 2016 conference was attended by hundreds of enthusiastic participants interested in teaching, learning and networking. In an effort to lower the carbon footprint, lessen the limitations and expense of travel, and to make the conference accessible to more people, we provided a live-stream option. This online tool enabled thousands of activists to participate from around the world, broadening our impact tenfold. (63,000+ people were reached and 6,000+ viewed an hour-long plenary livestream) The line up of the past two events included Dr. Vandana Shiva –author of Soil Not Oil which inspired this conference, Andrew Kimbrell, Claire Hope-Cummins, Rattan Lal and hundreds of scientists, farmers and activists from Latin America, Africa, and the United States. This year’s Soil Not Oil Conference will feature four keynote speakers, eight plenary presentations including 100+ speakers, and dozens of workshops focused on soil management, carbon farming, agro-ecology, legislation, social investment and other tools necessary to continue building the global movement for a livable climate.
Soil Not Oil is an educational event in which attendees learn the root causes, effects and solutions to climate change. We highly recommend it to students, educators, activists, farmers, scientists, investors, policy makers, health providers, parents, urban planners and everyone else concerned with life on earth.
